A short update on the CC scam

I made it to the CU today, signed all the paperwork, while my guy Riot kept me busy entertaining him at the same time, and had a chance to visit with CU notary about the how and whys of CC thievery. She asked if I had purchased anything at Best Buy – yes I have and do, but not a frequent type of thing. Then she asked if I paid at the pump with my CC. Sure.

There you may have it, Watson! Apparently that’s one of the easiest way for the crooks to get your card and pin #. They put a fake front over the actual equipment. The equipment takes your info and gives you the point of sale. Their fake front records your data, they come back later and pick it up and everyone’s info that used the pump. The CU notary said they are also noticing a trend right now with Best Buy and they believe it’s all coming in from the fuel pump scam.

Her advice was that if you can move the CC reader/face plate, at all, if anything shifts when you bump it or push it, don’t use it. I think better yet, we’d all be better off just to go inside and use their equipment. The same goes for transactions at an ATM, I’d been warned/heard about the fake front equipment beforeā€¦this just cements it home.

Too bad all those bad guys don’t spend more time doing something constructive with their time, like saving the planet, curing cancer, or wiping out hunger and disease, instead of costing the rest of us precious time in trying to protect ourselves and recover what was stolen. Assholes!

Anyway, today I got $$ and so did Burt. Whew! Life is looking better.

I hate thieves! The only thief I’ve ever loved are the ones I’ve meet at the poker table.

  1. P.S. Take a look at my blog for today in the ADDENDUM. I went looking for info about what you describe. There are a lot of variation and you are lucky your credit union had your debit card. Many banks are going to a hard line approach
