Memphis Mojo at the Seniors & More

I admit to being glued to the WSOP Senior’s Event live streaming until Memphis Mojo busted in third place.  And I was rooting for him to take it down.  He had to survive 4,425 players to take it home and he survived 4,422 of them.  Hells Bells!  What a feat! I’m sure he will have some stories to tell on his blog so check it out.

One of the guys in the announcers booth got a tweet about the WPBT and how Memphis Mojo was our representative (OK, I may not have it word for word) but no one in the booth knew what the WPBT was.  Fools! It’s happening again this year in Vegas and I’ve already confirmed my attendance for the tournament. Truthfully, if Ken Prevo hadn’t pinged me on Yahoo IM, I wouldn’t have known Memphis Mojo was in the tournament.  It was twofold fun, got to visit with Ken for a bit and watch the time delay tournament.

While Memphis Mojo is running wild in Las Vegas (as wild as any senior can be that’s been playing poker for three days solid), I want to whine about a stroke of bad fortune that affects me.

When I worked at Bellagio, I knew I had a cataract on my right eye — it’s not ripe yet was what the eye doctor told me.  Fast forward to a few years ago and my vision was blurry in that eye.  At the time, I had no insurance and no funds to ‘fix it!’  Now I’m a member of Senior Dimensions (United Health Care) and I have insurance.  I was quite excited to have the cataract removed because I would only need readers for close up and not glasses for distance since my left eye did the magic thing and I got ‘second sight’ a few years ago too.

After going through all the BS of eye doctors, dilation, blah, blah, blah, referrals to a surgeon, more eyes tests, and finally getting in to see the actual surgeon to schedule the cataract removal, I found out that due to astigmatism, if I have the cataract removed without taking care of the astigmatism at the same time, my vision will still be blurred.  BOOOOOO!

The deal is that instead of my eye being smooth like a ping pong ball, it has irregularities in it like a golf ball.  I need to have some type of resurfacing done (if that’s what it’s called) and that costs almost $2,000.  My insurance won’t pay for that, just the cataract removal. At first I thought I would go ahead and have the cataract removed but then my “Linda” reasoning kicked in and went, “WTF for?”  Why go through it if it’s not going to change anything.  I would have to wear glasses the rest of my life for distance.  So…I wait.  Here’s hoping the WSOP.com tables are good to me in the coming months because my only option is to win the money.

Yah…I handled my funds poorly while I was a single parent raising three kids and just like everyone else I know, I don’t have a money tree in my back yard.

But I do have these growing in my front yard.  It started as a project to simply have some green that would add a touch of earthiness to the desert landscape for the summer.  But now that I have fruit coming on (watermelon, cucumbers, winter squash), I’m even more pleased.

And this bad boy went across the property a few weeks ago.  He stopped, I took a few pictures and talked to him.  After a bit, he slithered on off into the mesquite grove on the other side of my chain link fence.

I’m trying to stay awake until 4:30 a.m. to go for a desert walk before it gets hot – then it’s sleep city.  G’nite.

  1. Mojo done good for an Old guy. He did.

Note on the eyes. Remember your drivers license? You gotta pass the eye test. Some blurry vision, ok. Cataract not good, they keep growing.

    Personal experience.

  2. I was seriously wishing, hoping, rooting for Memphis Mojo to pull down the Seniors event. He did do good for sure.
On the eyes, I plan on having the cataract removed, but not until I can find a way to fund the astigmatism correction at the same time. Here’s rooting myself into some big wins at WSOP.com…well…a bunch of small ones will do the trick too. 🙂 And who knows, PokerStars could be available on my desktop before you know it. More options make the stew better.
