Happy Mother’s Day

to all you mothers out there – and to the dads that filled in as mothers too!  As I’ve recently found out, having a furry kid is like being a mom all over again so let this wish go to all of you pet owners too.  Being a mom is not difficult to explain but going through some of the emotions of being a mom might be.

Here’s an example of being a mom that most moms can relate to:

Scouty and I walk over to the mesquite tree with the raven’s nest on most afternoons and they’ve not only hatched but become quite big.  There are six at the nest area and a parent sets off in another mesquite about 50 yards away while the other one is in another tree.  As I got close enough for pictures, one of the adults did a dive bomb type of fly by, arcing around and coming back (like the movie The Birds… no shit!), making outrageously shrill sounds at us.  I was about 20 feet from the tree.  The nest is up about 20 feet off the ground.  The dive bomber settled on the dirt about 30 feet away, watching us until we left.

And here’s my furry kid, Scouty, on one of our desert walks:

And I do feel protective of her, she’s like a little kid except when she turns into all teeth and snarl ready to take someone on.  Which she did the other day.

A guy came to take a look at all the weeds I wanted pulled/removed on the property and some of the gravel I wanted moved.  Scouty wasn’t going for it.  She went right for him.  I got her away and she went right back and nipped him, having a fit at him all the while.  DAMN!  It was entirely my fault.  The guy had been working over at my sis’s place and Scout had seen him, we’d even walked by him when she was on a leash and we were going out for a walk.

The day he came on property, I didn’t have a collar on her – lesson learned.  Guess he was OK at my sis’s place but not at our place.  She’s not like that with everyone; but I won’t put her in that spot again.  I do want her being protective of the property and me. The next step is to take precautions so she’s protected while she’s protecting me and whoever is visiting is protected too.

Maybe she thinks she’s the mom and I’m her kid?

There are a lot of ways to be a mom and they aren’t all about giving birth. Whether you fill the role or not, you know someone that does.  Wish them a great day!
