Winter has come to the high desert

Everyone in Pahrump is either high or wishes they were and they live in the desert.  OK, never mind.  I doubt the average is high enough to include everyone.  Point is it’s colder than a well digger’s ass at night right now.

The wind was so harsh yesterday that it blew my CA Pepper Tree over – hell yeah it was staked!  The tree is new enough that I pulled it upright, and flimsily staked it until I could run into town for more staking equipment. One of the stakes broke at the ground when it blew the tree over.  I’ve waited the customary 24 hours to see if the tree knows it’s dead or not.  I also trimmed the long hanging branches that it managed to grow in a few short months, off to waist height on me.  I should have pruned it up before but…

My sis came over and helped get all the staking done.  It’s amazing that they’ve been here for over 4 months now without taking a trip across the US.  That all may change soon.  She had some surgery done on her wrists is the main reason they’ve been off road so long.  It will seem really strange for them to be gone again. And I’ll be tending the trees and plants watering needs and care while she’s on the road…freezing my ass off is how I see it. But we have had really great weather during the day other than the tornado that came through and blew my pepper tree over.  I just happen to freeze as soon as the temperature drops to around 65.

The Halloween thingy revisited, she got 4 wolverines for a treat shortly after I left.  I’m sorry I missed out on that treat…I wonder how they were.  I super enjoyed the chimenae and the wine and company for Halloween, I got treated and not tricked.

Checking out some of the news online, “nearly 4,000 job applicants stood in line for hours, a few all night, to interview Wednesday for one of 800 new jobs at the expanding Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.” Story here.

It seems like a lot of people doesn’t it?

I started going through my filing cabinet and cleaning out old, old papers I thought I would never need. My hire packet for the Mirage was in the mix.  And my hire card:

That was a few million years ago, eh?  The amazing part of it was that 6,400 or so employees were hired out of the over 50,000 that applied from around the world. And the anniversary of my hire date is really coming up fast. Gasp!  Say it fast I guess and it doesn’t seem like forever – 22 years ago – or maybe it sounds worse when you say it fast.  Many of the hotshot poker stars of today aren’t even 22 yet.

On the old papers in the filing cabinet, I haven’t decided if I should throw away any of my hire packets or the original media party information held at Bellagio to announce the World Poker Tour.  It could be fun someday for a great grandkid to look through it all, especially if they play poker.  I’ll wait another year or so and make up my mind then.

I keep reading and writing about poker and gambling and the government.  I think the fun side of poker is missing in the media – completely!  I started playing poker because it was fun.  It just feels like everything to do with poker is a struggle when you catch any of the headlines.

The headlines are screaming for Eric Holder to resign over Fast and Furious.  I think he should have already resigned for not knowing who Phil Ivey is. No, I’m not making fun of the issues of fast and furious, just saying.

Time to fly…no broom tonight.  I broke it on Halloween.
